When you meet Alexander Bødker, it is evident that you are in the presence of a man with great energy, high spirits, and immense curiosity. In just three years, Alexander has progressed from a junior consultant to a senior consultant and now to a leading role as Product Manager for Formpipe’s grant solution ‘TAS’.
The story of Alexander is not just a tale of rapid career development but also of dedication, drive, and the ability to seize opportunities as they arise, even if doubts occur along the way.
An unconventional approach
Alexander's educational background doesn’t immediately suggest a grand IT career. As a humanities graduate with a degree in film and media studies from the University of Copenhagen, it wasn’t the path he expected to take. But when the opportunity presented itself, he grabbed it.
Through networking, he became aware of the open junior consultant position, and after research and positive conversations, he understood that many of the tasks were largely about people and creating good relationships—not just software.
It turned out that his unconventional background, combined with a natural ability to understand complex systems and work in a structured manner, kickstarted his success at Formpipe. Only a few days after being hired, he was assigned to a project for the Danish Fisheries Agency, one of Formpipe's TAS customers.
A flying start with the Fisheries Agency and Brexit arrangements
With a mix of excitement and the feeling of being in deep water, he attended his first client meeting—fortunately well-equipped with oars, a life jacket, and a supportive team and cheering boss.
"I became the primary consultant for the Fisheries Agency within a month", he says.
"My focus was to set up the various grant application forms for the grants that were to be applied for in the wake of the new fishing regulations and schemes that came into effect with Brexit. We set up all the schemes, wrote the application forms, and handled the entire process from application to payment."
Fishermen could apply for compensation, support for the scrapping of ships, and funds to make their ships more environmentally friendly. TAS played a central role in administering and ensuring that all these processes were carried out efficiently and correctly.
From junior til senior
After a period as a junior consultant, where Alexander quickly became known for his ability to understand and implement complex systems, he was promoted to senior consultant. The promotion was not only due to seniority but also the thorough training and good relationships he had built with clients.
"It was a combination of seniority and my boss and clients' satisfaction with my performance", Alexander says with a smile.
New challenges as Product Manager
At the turn of the year 2023/24, Formpipe's Danish and Swedish departments were merged into one common Formpipe Public Nordic. This led to a new opportunity for Alexander. He was offered the role of Product Manager for TAS, a job he accepted with excitement and some hesitation.
"I was very happy with my existing role as a consultant," Alexander explains. "It was a fantastic team I was part of, and I loved the close customer contact. But the opportunity to have more influence and ensure good choices for the product was too exciting to say no to."
Alexander has now been in the position of Product Manager for TAS for three months and already feels the increased responsibility. Although he is not a boss to anyone, the decisions he makes affect many people:
"I’m fine with the responsibility, but it can sometimes feel like pressure," he admits. "But I also know that it doesn’t help anyone to avoid making decisions."
Fortunately, Alexander always has support and sparring partners in his boss and colleagues.
With weekly 1:1 sparring meetings with his boss and product leader meetings with other Product Managers from both Denmark and Sweden, he is never left alone with the decisions. The support and continuous dialogue help him make well-considered choices that benefit both the product and the team.
Future goals and motivation
When it comes to the future, Alexander has clear goals and ambitions. He wants to grow with his current task and looks forward to expanding the market for TAS beyond Denmark's borders.
"We’ve just got our first Swedish TAS customer, so we are slowly expanding the market," he says enthusiastically, gesturing with his arms. You can sense that he is genuinely happy about the development he is helping to drive.
Alexander is certain about what has helped him in his career, and he gladly shares his advice with others: "Enter a workplace with good energy and be positive. Keep the energy high and be there for your colleagues. In the end, you get both happy colleagues and customers if you do well and work together—and that motivates."
